Course Description

Introduction to the history of Christian religious communities through an examination of the contributions of ascetic and apostolic figures who have acted as prophetic critics and strong supporters of the Church and the social/political structures of the world in which they lived. Study of the “desert fathers” and “desert mothers,” Western monasticism, the mendicant movement of the high Middle Ages, apostolic groups in the modern world, religious communities of women, and contemporary examples of non-traditional intentional communities.
