Course Description
History of the supernatural from the ancient world to the Enlightenment. Traces the variety of beliefs in forms of magic through primary sources and scholarship starting with Babylonian, Egyptian, and classical Greek and Roman contexts. Examines changes and continuities in these beliefs in the medieval and early modern world, with particular attention to the impact of the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution, as they inform the western conception of the supernatural by the early nineteenth century.Prerequisite: EN 125 or equivalent.Corequisite: EN 2680.Offered: Spring.
