Examines the history of the popes, and the papacy as an institution, from the origins of Christianity in Rome in the first century to the present. Major topics include the growth of papal power both theological and administrative in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the impact of the Reformation on papal power, and the challenge of political and scientific modernity to the papacy.
