Course Description

Examines motivations and justifications for European expansion into Asia and Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries, and strategies for accommodation and resistance - and ultimately revolution - developed by newly colonized people. Focuses primarily on Britain and France as imperial powers, and China, India, and parts of Africa as sites where local people ultimately asserted their independence.Prerequisite: EN 125 or equivalent.
