Course Description
A one semester course covering the fundamentals of general, organic and biochemistry as they relate to the health sciences and human medicine. General chemistry topics include states of matter, scientific measurements, balancing chemical equations, acid-base properties of aqueous reactions, pH-scale, buffers, and intramolecular and intermolecular chemical bonding. Organic topics include chemical nomenclature, structure, and function of biologically relevant organic compounds including function and reactivity of chemical groups commonly encountered in living systems. Biochemistry topics include structures and functions of lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids, protein synthesis, metabolism, energy production, and metabolism. This course is intended for nursing and other allied health students, where only one semester of chemistry is required. It is not intended for students who intend to pursue post-graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, or physician assistant. Offered: Typically offered in fall and spring semesters.Three hours of instruction per week.
