Course Description
This course focuses on conducting research in resource constrained environments, particularly at the margins of society such as in refugee camps, post-conflict areas, and amongst internally displaced persons. Students are introduced to the data collection process and tools for primary qualitative research including sampling techniques and logistics, designing and facilitating focus group discussions, transcription, coding and analysis of qualitative data, and ethics and safeguarding. Quantitative analysis tools and techniques, data visualization, report writing and presentation for advocacy, as well as research for social change are covered in depth. The course includes an experiential learning component with a particular research focus, for example Voices of Refugee Youth. Students successfully completing the course earn the credential of Social Innovation Researcher.Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
