Course Description
The genre of comics as an enterprise rooted in American culture and society, as a literary art form that uniquely integrates word and image, and as the subject of a discourse revolving around establishment versus underground art, entertainment versus social commentary, fiction versus non-fiction. The texts will include seminal works in the evolution of comix in the US (with a brief foray into the international realm) and key theoretical texts on the genre. Equivalent courses: IC 299 (Special Topics) of the same title, HP 101 (in Spring 2015).
