Students will be guided through in-depth study across disciplines and learn to apply their learning to lead efforts to create sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Students will further sharpen their habits of reflection and self-awareness in order to engage successfully with clients and partners, will employ leadership and collaborative skills, and will actively advocate for inclusion and social justice.

Program Learning Outcomes:

A graduate can expect to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Solve complex problems, make data-driven decisions that utilize creative and critical thinking, and identify and develop new social innovation opportunities; 

  • Make holistic judgments when analyzing business situations and social problems, using a strategic understanding of leadership and innovation and consider the relationships between various disciplines; 

  • Make decisions that make a difference in the world;

  • Utilize empathy and interpersonal skills to be highly effective leaders; 

  • Demonstrate ethical reasoning skills; understand social, civic, and professional responsibilities; aspire to add value to society; and

  • Communicate to inspire others in written and verbal form and facilitate information flow in a variety of organizational, social, and intercultural contexts. 

Program Learning Goals:

Students will exhibit the development of leadership capabilities through:

  • Written and oral communication techniques that motivate and inspire others; 

  • Creative problem solving in both professional and community settings;

  • Critical thinking and analysis in both professional and community settings; and 

  • Ethical awareness and reasoning with respect to leadership and social innovation.

Requirements

The major in Leadership and Social Innovation (LSI) is comprised of courses, community-based activities and research, experiential learning opportunities in the Capstone courses, and a co-op experience (approved by the LSI Chairs). Students will create their own area of focus dependent on their interests and goals.

Focus Areas and Co-Op Experience (12 Credits)

Students will complete 12 credits in a single academic experience (e.g., Political Science, Economics, Communication, Marketing, etc.) or they may design their own area of focus with approval from the program chairs.Three credits must be a co-op experience (LP 310).
