(For graduate level students not enrolled in JCU’s clinical mental health counseling master’s program)
The certificate program in Substance Use Disorders Counseling is a five-course, fifteen-semester-hour program. The program can be taken for graduate credit, no credit, or continuing education credit. It is designed for individuals seeking licensure as a chemical dependency counselor. Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree may attain licensure as a licensed chemical dependency counselor II or III; individuals with a master’s degree in a behavioral science may attain licensure as a licensed independent chemical dependency counselor.
The certificate program helps students enhance their knowledge and abilities to:
Assess, and then develop a treatment plan for individuals experiencing substance use disorders.
Facilitate group interventions for substance use disorders.
Evaluate the support system: the family, extended family, and community of those with substance use disorders.
Plan appropriate follow-up services and continuing care for those experiencing substance use disorders.
Admission Criteria
For applicants without a master’s degree, a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75.
Official transcripts for highest degree earned.
Two letters of recommendation (preferably one academic and one professional).
Interview with the program coordinator.
